Quick Tales

The Pretense of Us

Emily and Alex had been co-workers for years at the bustling ad agency, Sterling & Co. Their desks were nestled side by side in a corner of the open office plan, where they would often brainstorm ideas late into the night, fueled by coffee and takeout. Despite their close proximity, their relationship had always been strictly professional—until one fateful day when Alex's ex-girlfriend decided to make an unexpected appearance at the office holiday party.

In a desperate attempt to avoid an awkward confrontation, Emily volunteered to be Alex's "date" for the evening. They agreed it would be just for show, nothing more than a pretense to keep Alex's ex at bay. But as the night wore on and the champagne flowed, their act began to feel less like a charade and more like reality. They laughed together, danced together, and even found themselves stealing glances across the crowded room when they thought the other wasn't looking.

The next morning, Emily woke up with a pounding headache and a strange sense of unease. She had always prided herself on being level-headed and logical, but there was something about last night that didn't add up. She couldn't shake the feeling that she and Alex had crossed some invisible line, even if it was just in her own mind.

At work, they avoided each other at first, both unsure of how to act after their impromptu "date." But as the days passed, they found themselves falling back into their old routines, with one notable exception: there was a new tension between them, an electric charge that seemed to spark whenever they were within arm's reach.

One afternoon, Emily looked up from her desk to find Alex watching her intently. He had been doing this more and more lately, she noticed—staring at her like he was trying to solve some complex puzzle. She held his gaze for a moment before quickly averting her eyes, feeling a blush creep up her cheeks.

"What?" she asked, attempting to sound nonchalant.

Alex hesitated before speaking. "I was just thinking...about last night."

Emily's heart skipped a beat. "Last night?" she echoed, playing dumb.

He nodded. "The party. You and me."

She swallowed hard, trying to ignore the fluttering sensation in her stomach. "Oh, that," she said with a dismissive wave of her hand. "It was nothing, really. Just two co-workers having some fun."

Alex's expression turned serious. "Was it? Because it felt like more than that to me."

Emily couldn't breathe. She didn't know what to say or how to react. This wasn't part of the plan—they weren't supposed to be talking about this, let alone feeling anything for each other. But as she looked into Alex's eyes, she knew that denying her own feelings would be impossible.

"I think...I think I might have feelings for you," he confessed quietly, his voice barely above a whisper. "And I'm pretty sure it's not just because of the party."

Emily felt tears welling up in her eyes. She wanted to tell him that she felt the same way, that she had been fighting these feelings ever since their fake date. But fear held her back—fear of rejection, fear of ruining their friendship, fear of making things awkward at work.

Instead, she offered a weak smile and said, "I'm flattered, really. But I think we should just keep things as they are. You know, professional."

Alex looked disappointed, but he nodded nonetheless. "Okay," he said softly. "If that's what you want."

Over the next few weeks, Emily threw herself into her work, determined to forget about Alex and his confession. She took on extra projects, volunteered for overtime, and even started coming in on weekends. But no matter how hard she tried to distract herself, she couldn't shake the memory of that night at the holiday party—or the look in Alex's eyes when he told her how he felt.

Meanwhile, Alex seemed determined to move on as well. He started dating again, casually bringing up his latest conquests during their lunch breaks together. Emily tried not to let it bother her, but each time he mentioned another woman, she felt a pang of jealousy deep in her chest.

One day, as they were walking back from grabbing coffee together, Alex stopped suddenly and turned to face her. "Emily," he said, his voice laced with frustration, "I can't do this anymore."

She raised an eyebrow. "Do what?"

"Pretend like nothing happened between us," he explained. "Like I never told you how I felt and you didn't completely shut me down."

Emily felt a surge of anger. "I didn't shut you down!" she snapped. "I just said we should keep things professional, which is exactly what we've been doing!"

Alex shook his head. "No, that's not good enough anymore. I want more from you—from us. And if you can't give me that, then maybe it's time for one of us to find a new job."

Emily stared at him in disbelief. She had never seen Alex so passionate about anything before, and it took her breath away. But she also knew that he was right—they couldn't keep going on like this, pretending everything was fine when it clearly wasn't.

"Fine," she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. "Let's give this a shot."

Alex's face broke into a wide grin. "Really?" he asked, disbelief coloring his tone.

Emily nodded. "Yes, really. But we have to be careful—we can't let anyone at work find out about us until we're sure it's going to work."

Alex agreed, and they spent the rest of the day sneaking glances and sharing secret smiles whenever they thought no one was looking. That night, after everyone else had gone home, they stayed late at the office, ordering takeout and laughing together like old times.

As the weeks turned into months, their relationship blossomed right under their co-workers' noses. They went on real dates, held hands in public (but not too often), and even shared a few stolen kisses during lunch breaks. It was everything Emily had ever wanted—and more.

But despite their newfound happiness, they couldn't shake the feeling that they were still living a lie. They longed to be able to hold hands openly at work, to sit next to each other without pretending not to care, and to finally tell everyone about their relationship.

One day, as they were walking into the office together, Emily turned to Alex with determination in her eyes. "I think it's time we told everyone," she said firmly.

Alex looked taken aback. "Are you sure? We don't want to make things awkward at work."

Emily nodded resolutely. "It might be awkward at first, but I can't keep living this double life anymore. And besides, who cares what everyone else thinks? This is our happiness we're talking about here."

Alex smiled and pulled her into a tight hug. "You're right," he whispered in her ear. "Let's do it."

That afternoon, they called a meeting with their boss and the rest of the team. As everyone gathered around the conference table, Emily could feel her heart pounding in her chest. But she knew that this was the right thing to do—for both of them.

Taking a deep breath, she began to speak. "I have something important I want to share with all of you," she said, looking around at each person in turn. "Alex and I...we're together."

There was a moment of stunned silence before the room erupted into cheers and applause. Emily looked over at Alex, who was grinning from ear to ear, and knew that they had made the right decision.

From that day forward, there were no more secrets or pretenses between them. They held hands openly at work, laughed together during meetings, and even shared a few kisses in the break room when they thought no one was looking. Their relationship brought new life to the office, inspiring their co-workers with its passion and authenticity.

And as for Emily and Alex? They knew that they had found something truly special—something worth fighting for, no matter what challenges came their way. Because in the end, all that mattered was the love they shared and the life they were building together.
